Barbie Girls virtual world getting lots of sign-ups

Apparently, approximately 3 million people signed up for Barbie Girls, the pink and fluffy virtual world for pre-teen girls. Not that that means much, since you can sign up for free. In fact, I just did so this morning (Nekhebet is my avatar’s name).
The programmers have chosen to control speech in the virtual world by having a list of permissible words, or so Sarah has concluded after we tried it out this morning. You can’t use the apostrophe, you can’t say “man” or “boy” or “woman”, and quite a lot of other random words we tried. I fully understand the need to censor text in a virtual world that is aimed at kids, but if I can’t even say that “this woman is erudite”, how am I supposed to get the girls to thinking about other things than Barbie movies or shopping?
Because that’s pretty much all you can do in there: view movie trailers and shop for items you can’t buy unless you have Mattel’s Barbie Girl MP3 player. (Those players remind me of the cheap tinfoil-wrapped people-shaped chocolate we could buy when I was a kid. Every time I see the MP3 player, I get a craving for chocolate.) Note the desperation in the kids leaving comments at Ubergizmo crying for the player which is too expensive for them. Way to go, Mattel.
Conclusion: the Barbie Girl virtual world is one big commercial for Barbie made-for-DVD movies and an MP3 player.
Oh yeah, you can always talk to your friends in there, but you had better pick your words real carefully.

Omg that game is the stupidest
most BORING virtual game ive come across-so far
and ive seen lots.
I got a membership for it
cause i have money and can do whatever
but i regret it
cause its so boring the second day
there arent many games
and the ones they do have
u can go on miniclip and play
and the fashions are cool ,
thats the only pro thing about it.
but the chat is so limited-its pathetic
u cant have friends since the chat is so limited

its patheeeeeeeetic whoever made it is ..not very bright and im sure most of the 3 million girls signing up for it stopped playing in like a couple of days.
